Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to Unfurl National Flag in Mohali Amid Security Concerns

Chandigarh, January 23, 2025 – In a significant change of plans, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will now preside over the Republic Day celebrations in Mohali on January 26, 2025, instead of Faridkot. This decision comes after pro-Khalistani graffiti, slogans, and flags were discovered on the walls of Nehru Stadium in Faridkot, raising security concerns ahead of the national celebrations.

The graffiti and flags were reportedly placed by unidentified activists associated with the banned organization Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), led by terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannu. The alarming discovery was made early Thursday morning, prompting immediate action from local authorities who swiftly removed the slogans and flags to ensure safety and security for the upcoming event.

In light of these developments, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, who was originally scheduled to oversee the celebrations in Mohali, will now take on the role in Faridkot. This shift underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining order and security during a time of heightened sensitivity surrounding national events.

The incident has drawn criticism from local political leaders. Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa condemned the actions of the SFJ activists, emphasizing that Punjab has only recently emerged from a turbulent period marked by terrorism. He called for a focus on improving the state’s environment rather than inciting unrest.

The Republic Day event at Nehru Stadium was anticipated to be a significant occasion for showcasing state achievements and fostering unity among citizens. Chief Minister Mann was expected to inaugurate various projects during his visit to Faridkot on January 25, prior to participating in the Republic Day celebrations.

In response to the threats posed by such incidents, security measures have been significantly enhanced across Punjab. Authorities are working diligently to prevent any untoward incidents during the Republic Day celebrations. The police are on high alert, conducting thorough checks and surveillance in key areas known for potential unrest.

As preparations continue for the 76th Republic Day celebrations across India, including a grand parade in New Delhi featuring various tableaux representing different states, Punjab’s situation highlights ongoing challenges related to security and public safety.

With CM Bhagwant Mann now set to lead the celebrations in Mohali, there is hope that this change will allow for a more secure and peaceful observance of this important national holiday.
