Farmer Leader Bhupinder Singh Mann Criticizes Protests, Welcomes Dialogue

Chandigarh, February 16, 2024: Renowned farmer leader and former Member of Parliament, S. Bhupinder Singh Mann, expressed strong opinions regarding the ongoing protests involving Punjabi youth. While appreciating the efforts of the Punjab Chief Minister in seeking solutions, he criticized the Haryana government’s approach towards the protestors and questioned the motives of certain political leaders.

Mann commended the Punjab Chief Minister for his proactive approach in resolving the issue but expressed concern about the “heavy-handed” tactics employed by the Haryana government against the protesting youth. He emphasized that these young individuals are being “misled and exploited” by self-serving political actors who prioritize their own agendas over the well-being of the farming community. He urged the Haryana government to adopt a more lenient approach towards the young protestors.

Mann further criticized certain “so-called farmer leaders” for manipulating the situation for their own political gain. He accused them of using deceptive tactics and fabricating narratives to serve their hidden agendas. He warned against their attempts to sow discord and disrupt peace, similar to their actions during previous agitations.

Highlighting the negative consequences of the ongoing protests, Mann stressed the detrimental impact on Punjab’s economy, finances, and image. He pointed out the job losses, youth exodus, and worsening drug problem arising from the hostile atmosphere created by these protests. He expressed concern about the flight of industries from Punjab due to the ongoing unrest, considering the state’s sensitive border position.

Despite his criticism, Mann welcomed the recent dialogue initiated by the Central Government. He urged the protesting leaders to engage in constructive discussions with “open minds and logic” instead of repeating the “arrogance and timidity” displayed in the past.
