Punjab DGP Shake-Up: AAP Cracks Down on Corruption and Law & Order After Delhi Poll Debacle

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), still reeling from its debacle in the Delhi elections, has started taking drastic steps in Punjab to strengthen governance, curb corruption, and restore public confidence. Following a crucial meeting chaired by AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal at Kapurthala House in Delhi, where Punjab’s MLAs voiced serious concerns about law and order and corruption, the party has initiated its first major bureaucratic reshuffle in the state.
The Punjab government has taken decisive action by replacing Special Director General of Police (DGP) Varinder Kumar with ADGP (Provisioning) G Nageswara Rao as the new chief director of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB). This move comes in the wake of growing dissatisfaction over the Vigilance Bureau’s slow progress in handling high-profile corruption cases.
In another bold step, Muktsar Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Tripathi has been suspended on charges of corruption. The ruling party’s MLAs had reportedly raised complaints about his alleged involvement in corrupt practices, prompting immediate action from the government. Abhijit Kaplish has now been appointed as the new Deputy Commissioner of Muktsar, signaling a strong stance against corrupt officials.
Vigilance Bureau Shake-Up to Speed Up High-Profile Investigations
Sources in the Punjab Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) have revealed that Varinder Kumar’s removal was prompted by a lack of affirmative action from the Vigilance Bureau in several crucial corruption cases. AAP legislators had voiced their concerns over certain junior officers in the bureau allegedly running a “parallel system” and
independently issuing notices to officers and officials within the administration.
The government believes that with G Nageswara Rao now at the helm of the Vigilance Bureau, investigations into high-profile corruption cases will gain momentum, and a tighter grip will be maintained over junior officers. Kumar, who had led the Vigilance Bureau since 2022, has not been given a new posting yet and has been asked to report to the DGP. He is expected to retire later this year.
AAP’s Anti-Corruption Drive in Full Swing
The latest shake-up in Punjab’s administration comes as part of a larger directive issued by the state personnel department last week, instructing all deputy commissioners, senior superintendents of police (SSPs), sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs), and station house officers (SHOs) to take strict action against corruption in public offices or face consequences.
The AAP government in Punjab is making it clear that it is serious about delivering corruption-free and citizen-centric governance. As part of this new approach, officers will now be held more accountable, with performance reviews being conducted not just through official channels but also based on feedback from the public, MLAs, and MPs.
This major bureaucratic reshuffle is seen as AAP’s attempt to regain credibility after its electoral setback in Delhi, reinforcing its commitment to transparent and efficient governance in Punjab. By taking swift and strict action against corruption, the Mann-led government aims to send a strong message that inefficiency and corruption will not be tolerated under its rule.
