Punjab Leads the Way in Road Safety: Identifies and Fixes 60% of Black Spots
Chandigarh, February 14: In a significant achievement, Punjab has become the first state in India to identify and rectify over 60% of its 784 road accident black spots. Transport Minister S. Laljit Singh Bhullar announced this during the concluding ceremony of Road Safety Month held today.
Key Highlights:
- Rs. 700 crores invested in rectifying black spots using NHAI assistance.
- Dedicated Sadak Surkhya Force, CCTV cameras, and stricter enforcement against traffic violations implemented.
- Awareness campaigns, workshops, and medical camps held across the state.
Minister Bhullar emphasized the Chief Minister’s commitment to saving lives through road safety initiatives. He urged drivers to use seat belts and encouraged taxi operators to implement rear seat belt usage.
Additional activities during Road Safety Month included:
- Cycle/two-wheeler rallies
- Retro-reflective tape installation on vehicles
- Nukkad talks with drivers
- Seat belt and helmet awareness campaigns
- Special drives against red light violations, speeding, and drunk driving
- Roadside vegetation clearing
- Road signage installation
- Medical/eye checkup camps for drivers
Workshops and lectures addressed black spot identification and rectification strategies. Roadowning departments like NHAI, PWD (B&R), Local Government, and Punjab Mandi Board presented their progress reports.
400 First-Aid kits sponsored by Mr. Kamal Garg, IAS, MD MILKFED were distributed to drivers.
