In a major crackdown on interstate arms smuggling, the Punjab Police on Sunday arrested three members of a gang and seized 11 pistols, ₹2 lakh in cash, and a motorcycle from them.
The arrested accused have been identified as Anmol Singh, Karandeep Masih, and Jagroop Singh, all residents of Batala district. They were nabbed from the Fatehgarh Churrian area while traveling on their motorcycle.
During questioning, the accused revealed that they were receiving money through hawala from their US-based accomplices to buy arms and ammunition from Madhya Pradesh. The US-based accomplices have been identified as Kirandeep Singh Randhawa and Jarmanjit Singh.
Preliminary investigations have also revealed that the gang was planning to target members of a rival gang.
A case has been registered against the accused under the Arms Act, Indian Penal Code, and Money Laundering Act at SSOC Police Station in Amritsar.
The Punjab Police are committed to making the state crime-free, said Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav. He added that the police are putting all efforts to unearth the entire network of arms smugglers and bring them to justice.
