Punjab Police Busts Major Cross-Border Smuggling Racket; 6kg Heroin and Ammunition Seized

Chandigarh/Amritsar, September 29: In a significant development in Punjab’s fight against drug trafficking, the state police’s Counter Intelligence (CI) unit in Amritsar has uncovered a cross-border smuggling racket, seizing 6kg of heroin, 67 live cartridges of .30 bore, and two magazines. The operation, part of the ongoing drive to make Punjab a drug-free state, also recovered six mobile phones, including an Apple iPhone 11 Pro, and a Jio dongle. Despite this breakthrough, the prime suspect managed to escape, according to Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, who assured that raids are being conducted to apprehend the fugitive.

The investigation revealed that the absconding suspect, from Jaffarpur village in Gurdaspur, was involved in smuggling drugs and weapons, receiving consignments via drones from across the Indo-Pak border in the Batala-Gurdaspur region. The accused had recently received a shipment of heroin and arms, intended for further delivery to another party. Acting swiftly on a reliable intelligence tip, a police team led by DSP Balbir Singh raided the village, but the suspect evaded capture after discarding a bag that contained the contraband.

DGP Gaurav Yadav highlighted the ongoing efforts to arrest the accused and dismantle the larger network involved in this smuggling operation. Investigators are working to establish backward and forward linkages, seeking to identify other associates tied to the smuggling of drugs and arms. The case has been registered under FIR No. 59 at the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) in Amritsar, invoking relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Arms Act.

This operation underscores Punjab Police’s commitment to combating the state’s drug problem, with significant efforts being directed at breaking smuggling networks operating across the India-Pakistan border. As the investigation unfolds, more arrests and recoveries are anticipated.
