Punjab Police’s Comprehensive Preparations for Ensuring Security in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections
In the wake of the Election Commission of India (ECI) announcing the dates for the General Elections 2024, the state of Punjab gears up for its role in this democratic exercise. Led by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the Punjab Police is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted smoothly, fairly, and with utmost peace.
With polling scheduled for the last phase on June 1, DGP Gaurav Yadav, along with Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla, recently conducted a virtual briefing for all senior police officers, ranging from headquarters to Range ADGsP/IGsP/DIGs, and CPs/SSPs. This comprehensive briefing aimed to take stock of the security arrangements in the state ahead of the General elections, emphasizing the importance of adherence to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
The MCC coming into force with the announcement of election dates signifies a pivotal moment for law enforcement in Punjab. DGP Gaurav Yadav’s directive to strictly adhere to all aspects of the MCC underscores the commitment of the Punjab Police to uphold the principles of free and fair elections. Officers are instructed to follow all instructions and guidelines from the Election Commission of India, ensuring that electoral processes are conducted with integrity.
In line with these directives, a special campaign has been initiated to apprehend Proclaimed Offenders (POs) and Parole Jumpers, alongside executing non-bailable warrants (NBWs). Additionally, CPs/SSPs have been tasked with vigilant surveillance to prevent the sale of illicit liquor, narcotics, and psychotropic substances, ensuring a level playing field for all candidates and parties.
Furthermore, ensuring the safety and security of citizens during the electoral process is paramount. CPs/SSPs have been directed to oversee the deposition of weapons in compliance with ECI norms, mitigating the risk of violence or intimidation. This proactive approach aims to foster an environment conducive to peaceful democratic participation.
Special DGP Arpit Shukla elaborated on the heightened security measures across the state, emphasizing the deployment of police forces for election duties. Field officers are mandated to audit police resources and ensure that 75% of the police force is available for deployment during elections. Additionally, CPs/SSPs are instructed to conduct flag marches in their jurisdictions, bolstering public confidence and deterring anti-social elements.
In light of the border state’s unique security challenges, intensified checks at inter-state borders have been implemented to curb the movement of criminals, bootleggers, and drug smugglers. The deployment of 25 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), including CRPF, BSF, and ITBP, in vulnerable districts underscores the commitment to maintaining law and order.
These measures are complemented by the dissemination of guidelines issued by the ECI to all police officers, ensuring uniformity and adherence to electoral protocols. The concerted efforts of the Punjab Police aim to uphold the democratic values of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, safeguarding the electoral process for all stakeholders.
Punjab Police’s meticulous preparations underscore its unwavering commitment to ensuring the security and integrity of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Through proactive measures, stringent enforcement of regulations, and strategic deployment of resources, the Punjab Police aims to facilitate a democratic process that reflects the will of the people while upholding the highest standards of governance and law enforcement.
