SCERT and DIETs to be Restructured for Enhancing Quality Education: Himachal CM Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu
In a bid to revolutionize the education system in Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the restructuring of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs). Presiding over a meeting of the Education Department, the CM emphasized that this initiative aims to strengthen quality education and training across the state.
Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted the critical need to reform SCERT and DIETs to address the decline in Himachal Pradesh’s national ranking in education, which dropped to 21st place under the previous BJP government. The restructuring is aimed at offering a robust educational framework, ensuring students receive the best education possible in government institutions.
The Chief Minister stressed that the wrong policies of the past administration had negatively impacted the quality of education. However, the current government is committed to rectifying this by implementing innovative measures to revitalize the education system.
The merger of schools under the state’s education reform will lead to surplus Mid-Day Meal workers. The CM assured that these workers would be relocated to nearby schools, and their services would not be terminated, showcasing the government’s commitment to job security and operational efficiency.
The state government has introduced foreign exposure visits for teachers to adopt global best practices in teaching, which will enhance student learning. In addition, meritorious students excelling in academics, sports, and other fields will also have the opportunity for international exposure, allowing them to gain valuable experiences that will further enrich their education.
The government is also focusing on improving sports infrastructure in educational institutions, promoting holistic student development. Separate sports events for students aged 6 to 11 years will be organized under the Under-14 tournaments, providing primary school students with a platform to showcase their talents.
To further promote sports and support young athletes, the state government has increased diet money allowances for sports participants. For state-level championships, the allowance has been raised from ₹240 to ₹400, ₹300 for district-level events, and ₹240 for block-level competitions. Athletes competing in out-of-state events will now receive ₹500 as diet money, along with enhanced travel facilities.
In a proactive approach to ensure students remain mentally and physically fit, the CM has directed all schools to dedicate at least 15 minutes daily to physical exercise. This initiative is also part of the government’s broader effort to prevent drug abuse among students by encouraging active participation in sports.
The meeting was also attended by Education Minister Rohit Thakur, Secretary of Education Rakesh Kanwar, and other senior officials.
