SJVN achieves significant milestone with inauguration of country’s first multi-purpose green hydrogen pilot project
SJVN commissions centralized operation of 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station and 412 MW Rampur Hydro Power Station
SJVN Limited has achieved a significant milestone with the inauguration of India’s first multipurpose (combined heat and power) green hydrogen pilot project at the company’s 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Jhakri , Himachal Pradesh. The green hydrogen produced at the project will be used at NJHPS’s High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) coating facility for its combustion fuel requirements. Along with this, it will also generate electricity through a fuel cell of 25 kilowatt capacity.
This country’s first multipurpose (combined thermal and power) green hydrogen production plant was inaugurated by Chairperson and Managing Director Smt. Geeta Kapoor on April 24 , 2024 . Regarding the project, the Chairperson said , “ Moving ahead with the National Green Hydrogen Mission of the Government of India, this Green Hydrogen Pilot Project of SJVN is a preparation to accelerate the development of green hydrogen production infrastructure in the power sector , along with Green hydrogen is being positioned as a clean energy source.
This green hydrogen pilot project with state-of-the-art technology is capable of producing 14 kg of green hydrogen in eight hours of daily operation. The produced hydrogen will be stored at a pressure of 30 bar in six storage tanks with a total storage capacity of 12 m3 . The project will produce hydrogen using alkaline electrosizer of 20 Nm3 / hr capacity , powered by renewable energy supplied from SJVN’s 1.31 MW solar power plant at Wadhal , Shimla.
Along with power generation, green hydrogen will also be used for high velocity oxygen fuel coating on underwater parts of the turbine.
During her visit, the SJVN Chairperson monitored the power supply of 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) and 412 MW Rampur Hydro Power Station (Rampur HPS) through remotely operated Unit- 2 of Rampur HPS from the NJHPS Control Room at Jhakri , Himachal Pradesh. Also inaugurated the first centralized operation of its kind. Rampur HPS is being successfully operated with NJHPS through tandem operating system.
Mrs. Kapoor appreciated the dedicated efforts put in by the NJHPS team , Rampur HPS and the electrical design team at SJVN Corporate Headquarters for this success . He urged the employees to continue to work with full dedication to achieve the goal of operating the entire Rampur HPS project from NJHPS.
Mr. Manoj Kumar , Project Head of NJHPS , Mr. Vikas Marwah , Project Head of Rampur HPS , Mr. Harish Kumar Sharma , Head of Electrical Design Department , and senior officials of NJHPS , Rampur HPS and Corporate Headquarters were also present during the program.
