Supreme Court Slams Punjab Governor, asked the governors to act on the bills without further delay

Supreme Court Slams Punjab, Tamil Nadu Governors for Delaying Bills Cleared by Assemblies The Supreme Court today expressed serious concern over the delay by the governors of Punjab and Tamil Nadu in taking action on bills passed by the respective state assemblies. The court urged the governors to act on the bills without further delay, saying that such inaction undermines the democratic process. “Please don’t deflect the course of bills passed by a duly elected assembly,” Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said. “It’s a matter of very serious concern.” The court also warned the governors that they are “playing with fire” by delaying the bills. “How can the governor say this?” the bench asked. “We are not happy with what is happening in Punjab. Will we continue to be a parliamentary democracy?” The court’s comments come after the Punjab government moved the Supreme Court alleging that Governor Banwarilal Purohit has delayed giving assent to seven bills passed by the state assembly. The Punjab government has said that this delay is “unconstitutional” and has brought the entire administration to a “grinding halt.” The court has directed the Solicitor General to place on record the details of action taken by Governor Purohit on the bills passed by the Punjab assembly.
