THDC India Makes Major Strides in Hydropower with Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Project Progress

THDC India Limited (THDCIL) achieved a significant milestone in India’s hydroelectric development with the initiation of concrete work on Block No. 1 of the main dam for the 444 MW Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project. This announcement by Chairman and Managing Director Sh. R. K. Vishnoi on January 18, 2024, marks a crucial step towards bolstering the nation’s clean energy capabilities.

Record-Breaking TBM Achievement:

Beyond the dam’s progress, Sh. Vishnoi also highlighted another remarkable feat: the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) equipped with Double Shield technology. On January 17, 2024, this TBM set a new record in the Himalayan Hydro Electric Sector by constructing a 24-meter section of a 9.86-meter diameter Head Race Tunnel (HRT) in a single day. This accomplishment, which involved complex tasks like lining installation, Pea Gravel filling, and Grouting, stands as a testament to THDCIL’s engineering prowess and ability to overcome challenging Himalayan geology.

Commendations and Project Details:

Sh. Vishnoi conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to the dedicated officers and employees of the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project (VPHEP) in a video conference, praising their resilience and commitment. He emphasized the significance of commencing concrete work on the main dam, marking a major step towards project completion.

Providing further insights, Sh. Vishnoi explained that the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydro Electric Project is a run-of-the-river project located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The project features a 65-meter-high concrete dam on the Alaknanda River with a gross head of 237 meters, aiming to generate a significant 1657 million units of electricity. Notably, substantial progress has been made in the civil work on major project structures, including the Power House, Transformer Hall, Dam, HRT, and TRT area.

Collective Commitment and Future Outlook:

The online meeting, attended by senior officials like Sh. J. Behera (Director, Finance), Sh. Shallinder Singh (Director, Personnel), and Sh. Bhupender Gupta (Director, Technical), showcased a collective spirit and unwavering commitment to the project’s success. Each official extended their appreciation and encouragement to the VPHEP team, highlighting the importance of adhering to the project timeline and expressing optimism about potentially exceeding expectations and completing the project ahead of schedule.
