Tracking Devices to Enhance Safety for Trekkers in Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh Government to Enhance Safety for Trekkers
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has underlined the government’s unwavering dedication to adventure tourism in the region, with a strong emphasis on ensuring the safety of trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. To address the recurring issue of missing trekkers and enhance overall safety, a pioneering initiative is in the works. The Forest Department has been instructed to identify and officially mark trekking routes throughout the state.
These trekking routes will be thoughtfully planned, considering local weather conditions and the availability of essential amenities such as accommodation. To streamline the trekking experience and bolster safety, these routes will be offered to trekkers as comprehensive packages through the Eco-Tourism Society.
Chief Minister Sukhu expressed his concerns about the resource-intensive rescue operations required when trekkers get lost or face unexpected incidents. Designating trekking routes is expected to not only enhance safety but also make trekking more convenient. Under the proposed regulations, trekkers will be mandated to register before embarking on their journeys. Moreover, they will be provided with tracking devices as an essential safety measure, ensuring swift response in emergencies.
Additionally, the Forest Department will provide the services of trained guides to trekkers, further improving safety measures. These guides will be registered and receive specialized training, which will not only enhance the safety of trekkers but also create job opportunities for local youth.
The primary goal of this initiative is to reduce the number of missing trekkers and guarantee a secure trekking experience amid the breathtaking natural beauty of the state, as noted by Chief Minister Sukhu.
Furthermore, Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized the economic significance of tourism in Himachal and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting various forms of tourism, including religious, adventure, and eco-tourism. The state government has set an ambitious target of attracting five crore tourists annually, which will necessitate the expansion of essential facilities to accommodate this burgeoning sector.
