Opposition Cries Vendetta Politics as Ethics Panel Recommends Expulsion

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has been expelled from the Lok Sabha following the Ethics Committee’s recommendation over the controversial “cash-for-query” row. Opposition leaders have vehemently criticized the decision, accusing the BJP-led government of indulging in “vendetta politics”.

The 500-page report submitted to the Lok Sabha today sparked an uproar among opposition MPs who questioned the procedure adopted by the panel and demanded an open discussion on the report’s findings.

The Ethics Committee, investigating allegations brought forward by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, unanimously recommended Ms. Moitra’s expulsion from the 17th Lok Sabha, citing her “highly objectionable, unethical, heinous, and criminal conduct.”

The report, adopted by a 6:4 majority, revealed that Ms. Moitra visited the UAE four times between 2019 and 2023, during which period unauthorized access to her Lok Sabha login occurred on several occasions. Notably, Congress MP Preneet Kaur, previously suspended from her party, voted in favor of the report.

However, dissent notes were submitted by four opposition party members on the panel, highlighting concerns regarding the procedure and the conclusion reached.
