Urgent Health Alert: Diarrhea Outbreak Hits Mohali District – 71 Cases Reported

In Mohali district, a significant outbreak of diarrhea has emerged, with a total of 71 reported cases as of Thursday. Among these, 11 patients are currently receiving treatment at the government hospital in Phase 6, due to their deteriorating health conditions. Civil Surgeon Dr. Devinder Kumar visited the hospital to assess the situation of these patients. While 11 individuals have been hospitalized, the remaining patients are being monitored at home under the care of medical professionals, who are ensuring their health is closely watched. The majority of the cases have been traced back to the village of Kumbhda, where a medical camp has been established to operate around the clock. Affected residents are being provided with oral rehydration solution (ORS) packets and essential medications. Notably, the deaths of a 5-year-old girl and a 45-year-old man have been reported; however, neither individual was included in the medical team’s surveys nor sought treatment at the camp or hospital, leaving uncertainty about whether their deaths were directly linked to the diarrhea outbreak. Health department teams have begun conducting door-to-door surveys to identify any additional cases and provide necessary medical assistance proactively. Water samples have also been collected from the village’s water supply lines to investigate potential contamination. Dr. Kumar reassured the public that the situation is under control and that patient health is being prioritized. Meanwhile, epidemiologist Dr. Harmandeep Kaur has urged residents to consume boiled water and to visit nearby health centers only if they exhibit severe symptoms such as fever. The health department is committed to preventing further spread of the illness and ensuring swift recovery for those affected. In response to the outbreak, the Mohali administration has declared several areas as hotspots, including Ward 18 in Rouni Mohalla, Derabassi, and several villages such as Dheermanjra, Madanpur, and Muli Baidwan, among others. The situation highlights the critical need for public health awareness and the importance of community health initiatives to combat such outbreaks effectively.
