“Women for Water, Water for Women” campaign to celebrate “Jal Diwali from 07th November to 09th November 2023

On the unique initiative of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affair (MoHUA), the Department of Urban Development, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh has organized “Women for Water, Water for Women Campaign” under the flagship scheme of Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), in partnership with National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM). This campaign has been started to celebrate “Jal Diwali” from 7-9 November, 2023.
The campaign aims to provide a platform for inclusion of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) women in water governance. They will be given first-hand knowledge about water treatment and testing processes through visit to Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) in their respective cities. These visits will elucidate the vital procedures involved in delivering clean and safe drinking water to households.
The 15 WTPs sites were identified with the help of Jal Shakti Vibhag at different location out of which 13 WTPs sites have been visited on 07-Nov-2023 by the SHGs of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and 02 sites will be visited on 08-Nov-2023. The WTPs which are visited on 07-Nov-2023 by the SHGs of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) are Chamba, Bhota, Hamirpur, Dharamshala, Palampur, Kullu, Manali, Jogindernagar, Mandi, Shimla, Theog, Arki and Solan. The other 02 sites which are to be visited on 08-Nov-2023 will be Ghumarwin and Naina Devi.
Total 364 SHGs members alongwith the concerned officer has visited the 13 WTPs on 07-Nov-2023 and the concerned site engineers of Jal Shakti Vibhag apprised them about the various process involved in supplying clean and safe drinking water to household.
The visit was organized in the guidance of Commissioners of Municipal Corporations and Executive Officer/Secretaries of various Municipalities and Executive Engineers of Jal Shakti Vibhag and Shimla Jal Prabodhan Nigam Ltd. The CMMU and Community Organizer (COs) of NULM at field level helped to organize the SHGs members and other visit arrangements.
The outcomes of the campaign is to increase the awareness, knowledge on water treatment, sense of ownership, responsibility, empowerment of SHGs, positive community impact and model for future initiatives.
