Dr. Suman Singh, Director of Health & Family Welfare, Chandigarh Administration, inaugurated World Breastfeeding Week 2024. The event saw the presence of the District Family Welfare Officer, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Program Officers, and the Head of the Pediatrics Department, along with their staff.

Dr. Suman Singh unveiled a poster outlining the do’s and don’ts of breastfeeding. The poster aims to educate and guide mothers on best practices.
Dr. Savita Rathi, Medical Officer in the Department of Pediatrics at GMSH-16, Chandigarh, addressed mothers and healthcare providers on early initiation and proper techniques of breastfeeding. She highlighted the benefits of colostrum, the importance of expressed breast milk for working mothers, and the need to avoid promoting breast milk substitutes and commercial formula foods, in line with the Infant Milk Substitute (IMS) Act.
Dr. Suman Singh praised the healthcare providers for their dedication and stressed the importance of correct breastfeeding postures for both mother and child. She encouraged healthcare providers to initiate quality counseling sessions with mothers starting from the antenatal period and ensure breastfeeding begins within one hour of birth.
This inauguration marks the beginning of a series of activities and awareness programs aimed at promoting breastfeeding and supporting mothers across Chandigarh. The campaign underscores the critical role of healthcare providers in offering guidance and support to new mothers, ensuring that breastfeeding becomes a natural and integral part of early motherhood.
