In an important administrative development with significant relevance to Punjab’s electoral preparations, the Election Commission of India has appointed senior IAS officer Anindita Mitra as the new Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Punjab.
A 2007-batch IAS officer, Anindita Mitra takes over the crucial responsibility from Sibin C, a 2005-batch IAS officer, who has proceeded on central deputation to join the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as Joint Secretary. Her appointment comes at a strategically important time, as Punjab moves closer to the 2027 Assembly elections.
The Election Commission of India made the appointment in consultation with the Government of Punjab. According to the official communication, Mitra’s appointment as Chief Electoral Officer takes effect from the date she assumes charge and will continue until further orders. The Commission also directed the Punjab Government to ensure that she takes over the responsibilities of the office promptly.
The appointment places Anindita Mitra at the centre of Punjab’s electoral administration during a period when preparations for the next Assembly election are expected to gather momentum. The Chief Electoral Officer plays a critical role in coordinating with the Election Commission of India and the state administration to ensure the effective implementation of electoral laws, preparation and revision of electoral rolls, voter awareness initiatives and the overall management of elections.

Before taking up her new assignment, Anindita Mitra had been serving in a key role in the Punjab Government, including as Secretary, School Education. Her administrative experience and familiarity with the functioning of the state government are expected to be valuable as she takes charge of one of the most important constitutional and administrative responsibilities in Punjab.
Her appointment is particularly significant because Punjab is gradually entering the political and administrative build-up towards the 2027 Assembly elections. Reports indicate that the Election Commission approved Anindita Mitra’s name from a panel of IAS officers forwarded by the Punjab Government. The Commission subsequently communicated its decision to the Punjab Chief Secretary and asked that her assumption of charge be ensured without delay.
