The Punjab Cabinet led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has approved a major expansion of healthcare manpower, combining the revival of 33 posts at the Sub-Divisional Hospital in Chamkaur Sahib with the creation of 138 new posts in Malerkotla and Dhuri and approval to fill 80 vacant Dental Medical Officer positions.
The decisions represent one of the more significant healthcare-focused components of the latest Cabinet meeting and are aimed at strengthening staffing at government health institutions at the sub-divisional and district levels.
At Chamkaur Sahib, the Cabinet approved the revival of 33 posts at the upgraded Sub-Divisional Hospital. The hospital had earlier functioned as a Community Health Centre, and the expansion of its staffing structure is intended to support the higher level of services expected from the upgraded institution.
The posts cover several medical and support categories, including Medical Officers in Medicine, Orthopaedics, Anaesthesia, Pathology, Ophthalmology and Radiology. The approved manpower structure also includes nursing, laboratory and technical personnel, drivers, clerical staff and other supporting positions.
The significance of the decision extends beyond simply adding government posts. A hospital can be physically upgraded, but without doctors, nurses, technicians and administrative staff, the benefits of that infrastructure cannot fully reach patients. The Mann government’s decision therefore links healthcare infrastructure with manpower availability.
The Cabinet also approved the creation of 19 posts for various cadres in the Office of the Civil Surgeon, Malerkotla. The stated objective is to improve administrative efficiency and strengthen the delivery of healthcare services in the district.
An even larger expansion has been approved at the Sub-Divisional Hospital, Dhuri and the newly constructed Mother and Child Health Centre there. The Cabinet cleared 119 new posts across different cadres to support comprehensive and more advanced healthcare services.
Taken together, the Chamkaur Sahib, Malerkotla and Dhuri decisions amount to 171 posts either revived or newly created, before accounting for the separate decision to fill vacant Dental Medical Officer positions.
The Cabinet has also approved the filling of 80 vacant posts of Medical Officer (Dental) in the Department of Health and Family Welfare. Of these, 53 positions have remained vacant for more than a year, while 27 have been vacant for less than a year.
The decision comes at a time when access to specialists and trained healthcare personnel remains one of the central challenges facing public healthcare systems, particularly outside major urban centres.
For Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the healthcare decisions provide the government with an opportunity to demonstrate that expansion of public health services is not limited to major hospitals and cities. Strengthening sub-divisional hospitals can potentially reduce the need for patients to travel to larger district hospitals or medical institutions for services that can be provided closer to home.
The real test, however, will be the speed of recruitment and deployment. Creation or revival of posts is only the first step; filling them with qualified personnel and ensuring the availability of equipment, medicines and supporting infrastructure will determine the impact on patients.
The latest Cabinet decisions nevertheless signal a continued emphasis by the Mann government on expanding the capacity of Punjab’s public healthcare network.
