In a dramatic development, the tragic death of Aqil Akhtar — son of former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and ex-minister Razia Sultana — has taken an unexpected turn. Initially presumed to be due to a drug overdose at his residence in Panchkula, Haryana on the night of October 16, the case has now been re-registered as a homicide involving alleged criminal conspiracy.
A murder FIR has been lodged at Mansa Devi Police Station in Panchkula naming Mustafa, his wife, their son’s wife, daughter and daughter-in-law as accused under Sections 103 (1) and 61 BNS of the IPC, following a complaint by neighbour Shamsuddin. He alleged that Aqil had been claiming his father and wife were involved in an illicit affair — a claim corroborated by a video the deceased posted on social media in August.
According to official sources, Aqil was found unconscious in his Sector-4, MDC Township home in Panchkula and later declared dead after being rushed to Civil Hospital—Sector 6. The first post-mortem found no visible injuries, and investigations initially leaned towards medication overdose.
DCP Srishti Gupta confirmed the case’s escalation on October 20 when a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to probe the murder angle under ACP-level supervision.
This case has not only shocked the state’s policing and political circles, but also raised serious questions about abuse of power, family feuds masked as medical tragedies and the integrity of accountability in high-profile households. With evidence of alleged extramarital links, social-media videos of the deceased’s accusations and now a full-fledged murder charge, the matter now hinges on forensic reports and the SIT’s findings.
As Punjab and Haryana watch closely, the outcome of this investigation may hit far beyond just one family — it could reshape public trust in governance and justice systems when the powerful are involved.
