Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Pushes for Expanded International Flights from Mohali, Cites Economic Growth and Investment Boost

Emphasising global connectivity as a key engine of economic growth rather than mere symbolism, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Friday strongly advocated the launch of more international flights from Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Mohali. He said enhanced overseas air connectivity would substantially accelerate economic activity, tourism and investment across Punjab and the wider region.

The Chief Minister’s remarks came during an interaction with officials of Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL), who presented an interim dividend cheque of ₹19 crore to the Punjab government. Mann described the dividend as a clear indicator of the airport’s steady growth and a reflection of effective cooperation between the Centre and the Punjab government.

Highlighting the strategic importance of international air links, Mann said stronger global connectivity from Mohali would significantly ease travel for entrepreneurs, traders and industrialists, both from within the country and abroad. He noted that improved access would not only facilitate business operations but also generate new employment opportunities for Punjab’s youth, thereby providing a major boost to the state’s economy.

“The Punjab government is fully committed to expanding international operations from Mohali to connect our vibrant state with major global destinations. This will open new avenues of employment for our youth and give fresh momentum to economic growth,” the Chief Minister said.

Mann further asserted that additional international flights would enhance trade and commerce, attract leading global entrepreneurs and encourage large-scale investments in the state. He expressed confidence that expanded air operations would act as a catalyst for industrialisation while positioning Punjab as one of the most preferred destinations for international business and tourism.

Reiterating the state’s pro-growth approach, the Chief Minister said the continued success of Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport underlined the potential of strong Centre–state collaboration in driving infrastructure-led development and integrating Punjab more closely with the global economy.
