Amritsar: In a shocking incident, a sarpanch associated with Punjab’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party was shot dead by unidentified assailants at a wedding venue in Amritsar on Sunday. The incident took place at the Marigold Resort, where the victim, identified as Jarnail Singh, had arrived to attend a relative’s wedding.

According to preliminary information, the attackers entered the wedding hall premises and opened fire at Singh, targeting him at close range. He sustained a gunshot injury to the head and was rushed to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Amritsar Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagjeet Walia said that a detailed investigation is underway. “We are examining the crime scene and probing the incident from all possible angles. Initial findings suggest that the attackers specifically entered the venue with the intention to kill him,” the officer said.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that two assailants fired at least two rounds at Singh before fleeing the scene, triggering panic among guests present at the wedding. CCTV footage recovered from the venue reportedly shows the attackers approaching the sarpanch from behind and firing at the back of his head, causing him to collapse instantly.
Police teams are now scanning CCTV footage from the resort and surrounding areas to establish the identity of the shooters and trace their escape route. Security has been tightened in the area, and efforts are being made to ascertain the motive behind the targeted killing.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised concerns over law and order. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
